Medical Laboratory Assistant Certificate - Online
The online Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) Certificate gives those who may already be in the healthcare field the opportunity to learn additional laboratory skills such as phlebotomy, specimen processing, and basic laboratory testing.
This 15-week MLA course, MLS 1010 Core Clinical Practices (4 credits), is available online every semester. Lectures, assignments, and exams are completed online in conjunction with a minimum of 64 clinical hours at the students laboratory.
This program is only available to students in the United States.
MLA CERTIFICATE COURSEWORK
Learn fundamental and ethical skills, including:
- General laboratory safety
- Basic quality control and quality assurance
- Phlebotomy practice and techniques
- Pre-analytical specimen processing
- Urinalysis with microscopy, immunology, and basic hematology testing
- Point of Care testing in clinical chemistry and microbiology
Students who continue their education and apply to the Online AAS Medical Laboratory Technician program may have the first MLT program course waived.
Students can qualify for the MLA (ASCP) exam via route 6 using the MLA course plus six months of full-time laboratory experience.
ADMISSION FOR THE ONLINE MEDICAL LABORATORY ASSISTANT CERTIFICATE
STEP 1: Apply
¶¶Òô³Ô¹Ï is an open-enrollment university, you can apply any time. If you've taken a ¶¶Òô³Ô¹Ï course in the past (including concurrently), visit Taking a Break at Weber for more information.
During this process, select “Non-Degree Seeking” as your major if only planning to take MLA course. If interested in pursuing MLT program afterwards, apply as "Degree Seeking".
STEP 2: Secure Clinical Placement
Students must have a lab willing to support them with clinical hours in all of the following areas: phlebotomy, urinalysis, immunology/serology, hematology (basic), point of care testing. Once placement is secured, the student and lab director/manager will complete the MLA Statement of Support.

STEP 3: Apply for MLA Certificate Course
A secondary application for the MLA course is required to ensure a student has proper clinical support. Application requires:
- Completed MLA Statement of Support must be uploaded to your MLA application.
- A one-time, non-refundable $30 application fee (payable via credit card)
Priority Application Deadlines
- Fall semester: May 1
- Spring semester: September 1
- Summer semester: February 1
Before being cleared to register for MLS 1010, ¶¶Òô³Ô¹Ï and the facility that signed your statement of support must complete an affiliation agreement for you to be able to complete the clinical rotation associated with the MLA course. The MLS Department will complete this agreement. Once this agreement has been completed, you will be sent information on any student onboarding requirements and how to register.
